My vision of leadership

Leadership in my vision is the one who capable to motivate people or their subordinate to archive the goal with willingness.A leader is the person who has an attractive personality which easily convince or influence other people. Moreover, leader has to have the right attitude with open-minded and fairly. Good leader should be honest and respect everyone equally and not judging people at the first sight. A leader not just someone who gave an order to their clue but it is the one who know the right person with the right position and encouraging them to provided their best. The main duty of leader is to motivate people and strengthen the dynamic of workplace toward the goal. A leader in my vision have to be creatively and risk-taker as Richard Branson which is always be my role model of leadership.

He is the craziest leader which i ever seen, however, his empire is very successful. He is the role model of new world leader, the history of Richard Branson was start since his teenager. He has done so many things as we already know such as, newspaper, record studio, airline, train,etc. Those business were incredibly successful.I following this guy from pocketbook , clip and social media to analyze his mind-set and trying to apply to myself. From my opinion, i think the key success of Richard is his habitual which is a bit hasty. He was trying to be the fastest man who came across Atlantic by his speedboat, he also tried to flew with balloon around the world, and so crazy things that he had done has reflect on his style of work. He fears on nothing but before he tried to taking risk he often make a good preparation and also have plan b as well. He usually do something that contrast with majority opinion such as, In 1979 he put more than half oh his money to bought ” Nicker Island” , he gave the reason that he think this island is the another most beautiful thing in the world except his wife. Many people may think that it is useless to put a tons of money for nothing but today Nicker Island is one of the most expensive holiday destination in the world. More than 400  companies under the virgin brand which he has established, he reflect his vision of leadership in 3 keys, firstly , you have to be a great listener, great motivator and very good at praising people and all of these are the critically attribution for a great leader. So this is kind of leader that i want to be.

In term of my skills, i have been constantly developing myself because i believe that no one can stop developing themselves if they want to success. Book is the best tool for anyone who want to develop themselves. However, from my colleague point of view about my leader skill through 5 weeks of leadership class, i have found that i am collectivism which i can work very well as a team work not individualism and also thought of everyone equally.Moreover, my colleague think that i am a kind of person who happy to take risk and indulgence.Nevertheless, there are some area which i think  i have to develop because my college think that i  should listen more feedback from the team so i will develop my self to be a good listener as it had been suggestion from Branson. Consequently, from the overall  feedback of my colleague i think i am ready to be a leader, therefore i will strengthen my leader ability along the way of this MBA course. This MBA course is very helpful to me to improve myself in term of leadership, with a lot of lessons and activities that provide benefit to practice to be a good leader. Moreover, i will keep following my role model ” Richard Branson ” to analyze his attitude and mindset then try to adapt to myself.  One thing i particularly interest about leadership skill is creativity which i think i can improve this skill from both of role model and MBA course.Richard is the great role model for creativity so it great that i can learn from him by YouTube or other medias , MBA course also have creativity subject in term 3 and that would be my great opportunity to develop this idea.

Most effective Leadership &Management Styles & approaches

In order to managing subordinated in the workplace, there is no doubt that an effective leadership is needed.  According the statement by CIM

Which personal style should managers adopt to ensure success? What is the most effective approach to managing the work of subordinates? These questions have been extensively researched and debated over the last century, and while the general consensus has moved away from ‘command and control’ management and leadership towards more consultative and participative approaches,(CMI 2013).

Firstly, we have to clarify the similarity and the different between manager and leadership. Here is the comparison between leader and manager.

Leadership means “the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organizations of which they are members.”(Diffen, 2015). A leader usually have personal style which often comfortable to taking risk sometime it may seen as crazy risk and they also contain plenty of imagination as an obvious example liked Richard Branson. On the other hand, a manager is the one who managing a group or more than one people to accomplished the goal and usually strict with the rule and tend to be rational. A manager often focusing on managing working  and expect a good result of work while a leader focusing on leading people and expect for achievement. A leader usually motivated people while a manager managing their team by following the task.Moreover,the most important different is a manager appealing by head while a manager appealing by heart. To make this point more clear there is a good clip from Seth Godin talking about the different between manager and leader from his experience. 

As we seen in this dynamic world today, a successful organization are often lead by an effective leader which have unique personal style liked, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson and Mark Zuckerberg. These people have their own unique personality but they also have some similar factor which is the key of their success. they are not working as a manager but they work as a leader,they are good at motivated people and create a powerful workplace becasue they know how to put the right people on the right position. Moreover, they are kind of person who are not afraid to taking risk to dare a new space which no one came across, these people are the real builder who has no fear to generate a new idea to the world. Without Jobs the world might not have i-phone, without Mark we might not have Facebook and without Branson the virgin group will not exist and there might not have no one who dare enough to create a commercial spaceship to travel outside the world.This is kind of leader which i think it is the most effective leader.

However according by this statement,

 there is no single ideal, as the best approach may vary according to circumstances and individual characteristics (CMI 2013).

From my opinion, i quite not agree with this statement because i think in these day there are plenty of role model in term of effective leader which available to analyze and apply their pattern to our real practical working. As an example above which i referred to Jobs, Zuckerberg and Branson which are the effective leader because they are good at motivate and inspire people. They are many task for work as a CEO of company but their most important daily job is lead thire people by encouraging them and provide them the right direction of work. As a perspective of team member i want to be led by someone like Jobs because i want the leader who can encouraging me and motivating me to create the work. Jobs is the one who has that skill he is the good inspires  as we can see in this clip that how good he can motivate and inspire people : 

There are the distinct between leader and manager, you will be a good leader as a good manager but you won’t be a good manager if you are not a good leader. Manager is a position but to be the leader is more than that, you have to work with your heart not just your head. Lastly, an effective leader must be the one who have depth understand the different amount people and no judge because ” If you judge people, you have no time to love them” – Mother Teresa, it means leader must not judging people because once they judge someone they will not  have a chance to see them critically.

Leadership & Change

In this dynamic world, everything has been changing constantly . It is the basic rule of the world that nothing would be the same, everything is happen, growing and died or disappeared respectively. This is the rule of the world that no one can avoid, everyone have to face with changing. As the statement of Mullins (2010) :

Change is nothing new and a simple fact of life. Some people actively thrive on new challenges and constant change, while others prefer the comfort of the status quo and strongly resist any change.

Normally, changing always bring something new to our life depends on what we have changed. If we changed workplace, we will have new colleges and new job role. If we changed our lifestyle we will facing with new experiences, new people and other new things that we never experienced before. Some changed followed with a good thing and of course some changed might provided bad effect as well. That is why there are some people who dare not to change anything, they rather comfort to live in their safe zone and not taking risk to change something new. There is nothing wrong for people who dare not to change their life, but in term of a leader who toward success, there is no space to stay the same. In order to achieve success, a good leader have to makes different and no afraid to step out of the comfort zone and change something to be better, sometime it may seen that it have to taking some risk  but from my opinion, in this dynamic world if we still be the same and change nothing is mush more risk . In order to lead the organization, if the same strategies or action does not effective anymore, it is necessary that leader have to change strategies or action to achieve  success results. On the other hands, if leader dare not to changes, the result would definitely be the same because the action is does not changed. The problem is there might be some people in organization does not agree with the changing decision of the leader as this statement :

It is all down to the personality of the individual and there is little management can do about resistance to change(Mullins 2010: 753)

From the clip the speaker has mention the reasons that people in organization fear to change,firstly they don’t understand what to change, secondly is they don’t like it, this is kind of emotional reflection when they fear of what the leader told them to change, it might because they did not see any better to changed and the last is they don’t like their boss, its mean they don’t want to change because they don’t like their boss so whatever their boss said they will never be able to listen and obey. In order to overcoming the changing’s resistance, leader have to consider these 3 reason carefully. Firstly, personality of leader is most important because if the team member does not like their leader so they will hardly listen what does their boss saying. Secondly, leader have to provides enough information to make the team member understand what is about to change and how, and lastly leader have to be good at influence the team member to see the benefit of change, get rid their hesitation and make them comfortably to change. Most of all, leader have to make sure that they pay attention with each team member enough to understand the changing and if there are some member that resistance to change at the end,  it will be better to send them out of the team because they might damage the team process inside with their disobey as this clip mention : 

As we have seen the successful organization liked Facebook ,Starbucks and Apples. These companies have overcoming the changing resistance as we can see that they can survive and apply their capability to take advantage in this changing world. These companies are flexible to change because their employees have the attitude in the same way  and that provided them an opportunities to grab a chance immediately.

In conclusion, Changing’s resistance is the problem which every leaders have to facing with. However,  the way to fix this problem is to convince team members to change and if it turn out that they are not be able to change, the last way to solve this problem is fire them out and find someone who has similarity attitude direction with the majority of team member which be able to change.

The challenge of managing diverse teams

In this globalization world, we are all different in some way. To work as a team “differentiation ” is the factor that challenging the team to overcome ,there are many factors which can bring advantages and  also challenge the team in term of differentiation management. This is the duty of team leader or manager to balance the different within the team in order to improve the performance of work, there are many different factors which can be both of advantage and also disadvantage as well. The diverse team will face with different of aging, gender, raise, culture, experiences. It might be seen complex to work in the team that each of team member are all different from each other, however, to work as a group of diverse might probably provides better performance to organization .“Research has consistently shown that diverse teams produce better results, provided they are well led.” (Ibarra & Hansen 2011: 71). As this statement has claimed that diverse team can bring a better performance to organization which i am totally agree. This is a clip which talking about why diverse team is better. 

From this clip, we can see the advantage of diverse team which they use slogan ” make it difference” . I totally agree with this idea that in one team should contain various type of people as they compare the way of work as an equipment which has been used in different purpose. In term of the surface of working, there will be various occasions which use various people in each work, and the team that contain people who fit in with each job will be more effective than tradition team. On the other hand, in the team which contain similar type of people, the direction of work might not creatively and critically as diverse team because when similar people are in the same group, an alternative solution probably not exist and they probably contain same level and type of skill ,so in the circumstance that the team want someone who specialist on something, unfortunately, team of similar people can not respond to this point.Moreover, in term of team discussion, diverse team potentially to provide more effective result because it has been  through various perspective discussion , so the result is more critical. One thing we have to accept in these world today is, successful caused by the one who outstanding such as, Apple by Steve Jobs , and to be outstanding you have to be different. So the idea “Make it difference” is appear to be one of the key of success in the world of competition today. However, there are also has some disadvantage of diverse team as well. Firstly, the barrier of language (Ingram 2015) which can impact the team performance in term of communication because there are different race and culture in diverse team which can lead the  team member to misunderstanding the purpose of each other. Secondly, the gab between ageing and experience which have to taking time to closing this gap.

Moreover, this is the challenge of a leader or manager to use their ability to managing a diverse team. “The ability to bring together people from different backgrounds, disciplines, cultures, and generations and leverage all they have to offer, therefore, is a must-have for leaders” (Ibarra & Hansen 2011: 71). As this statement has point out, a manager must have ability to manage people from different profile, which a manager have to use their ability to provide conflict management training in order to prevent any conflict which might happen into the team (Sammartino et al. 2002). Also the communication training to strengthen the team performance to be more effective. Most important thing is that manager or the team leader should encouraging the value of difference and also develop team identity(Sammartino et al. 2002). Leader should give trust to team member and give their space to do their work freely and creatively. This is an interesting clip of Steve Jobs talking about how he managed the diverse team : 

As Jobs said in order to manage diverse workplace “Trust” is an important factor which will strengthen team performance and encouraging team member to provide their best. They all also have meeting once a week to present to each other what are they looking up to in the moment which is good for work environment because they can see the overview of work progress and to avoid work repeated.

In overall, the obstacle in diversity workplace might be overcome by the ability of the leader. In term to managing different people ” Trust ” and ” Understanding ” are required, and most important thing is the leader should encouraging the value of difference because different is the crucial factor which can strengthen an organization to be outstanding. In term to do that, it start from the different result which provided by the discussion of different opinions from different people, different view and perspective in diverse team.

Leadership and Ethic

Leadership has been required since the first step of human’s evolution. Every societies or organisations are all need a leadership, who has an ability to influence and lead the amount of people to have the same direction in both term of practical activities and attitude. Additionally, In the 20 century which is the era of human right rising ,Ethical is an important issue which has been considered to be the issue that a good leader should concern with. “Ethical Leadership is defined as “the demonstration of normatively appropriate conduct through personal actions and interpersonal relationships, and the promotion of such conduct to followers through two-way communication, reinforcement and decision-making”(Rubin et al 2010: 216-17). Also there are many business thinkers stated that ethical leadership should having good character referring to having “the right value” be the leader who has a strong character(Freeman and Stewart 2006). On one hand, Deontology is also referred to as duty-based ethics. It is an approach to ethics that addresses whether the motives behind certain actions are right or wrong instead of focusing on whether the results of the action are right or wrong. It is based on each individual’s duty or obligation towards each other, all living things, and the environment based on moral beliefs and values. It teaches about always acting in good faith and adheres to the Golden Rule to treat others the way you want to be treated by them(Emelda 2011). On the other hand, Teleology or consequentialism is referred to as results-oriented ethics. It focuses on the purpose of each action and whether there is an intention or meaning for the action.

As an ethical leader it difficult to identify which one is the best model to follow, however most of justice or even the law are based on the moral belief which is the basic common sense to judge whether one action is right or wrong. I totally agree with Deontology principle because it is the way which based on moral belief. There are many leader which enormous success because they are ethical leader, they lead their companies as an ethical leader. On the other hand, unethical leader mostly are failure. It is necessary that organisation should have an ethical leader who are not only concern about profit because unethical leader can be harmful to an organisation. As many cases which unethical leader can harm the company because they are greedy and concern only profit, some are selfish and corrupt. For instance ,”Rod Blagojevich, the governor of Illinois who allegedly tried to “sell” the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. Some reports say he tried to trade the seat for ambassadorships, money and positions within pro-union groups and even a $150,000 salary for his wife.”(Kostigen 2009). “The evidence suggests that ethical leader behavior can have important positive effects on both individual and organizational effectiveness “(Rubin et al 2010: 216-17).There is a good example of real ethical leader in the big famous company in the world ” Starbucks ” which is very successful, normally general company are expect to maximize high profit as many companies always do, However the way of Howard Schultz is different.

From the clip, we can see that Howard build Starbucks to reach no.1 of coffee shop around the world, the key of his success not only because the business strategy or the excellent marketing plan.But also because he has dedicate himself into every steps of their company, especially in term of Starbucks ‘s employees which he delicate to encourage their staff to serve the best quality of product and service to all customers. He also provided a lot of benefits to their employees and respect everyone in the same level whether they graduated from Harvard or uneducated.Moreover, not only employees which he concern and show his ethical, but he also concern with the suppliers of Starbucks such as, farmer.  A lot of evidence from this clip proved that Howard is the real ethical leader which build Starbucks ‘s success by his ethical.

As a business man, profit is the golden goal of business activities which no one can argue that profit is the first priority of doing business. However, in this era, it is obviously that the way to reach the high profit and success is also important as well. The leader have to considered every action of doing business.They should aims to reach the high profit with ethical and also provides harmless to every section which relate with the company, such as customer, suppliers and company ‘s member. As many real cases of successful companies, we can see that most success company in the world are leading by ethical leader.This is no doubt that ” Ethic ” is an important factor of leadership.

Analyze my experience of Writing a Literature review

Analyze my experience of writing a Literature Review

I wrote my Literature review on 16/2/2015 after 2days that I have been research some articles and journals to provide the information into my literature review. At first, I have confused about what was should be the topic of my research. Actually, I have passion about phycology and I have been reading several books about how people’s mind is working. I do interest about the power of conscious mind that reflect to the law of attraction which I now reading about. However, I have found that my actual interest might not be easy to collect the data in the part of questionnaire, so I reconsider to change my topic. My first topic is about neuromarketing, this is a new kind of marketing that make me exiting but because of the limit of time and this topic required a lot more research than recent topic so I have decided to change. Nevertheless, this topic is in my interest as well because I always wonder when I saw my friends bought an expensive bag or luxury products, I always have a question to them that why they didn’t buy another brand which more cheaper but same quality. Later on, I gradually understand about branding, value added and taste and that make me fascinating about all of the process of branding and what is the exactly factor that motivate most people willing to pay a lot of money to be the owner of tiny Chanel bag in the same price as a second hand car. I do this research to respond my curios and hopefully my research would be useful for someone in somehow.

Analyze skills audit and personal development plan

Personal skills are very important in term of both of career and study. I have been working for 2 years at my family business which is about artificial flower company. In my part of the job mostly related with selling process, which required me a lot of skills to get the job done. I have analyze my skills audit template and i realize that most skills i think i have already developed are the skills which i obtained from my work experience. However, there are a lot of skills that i have to improve

in area of developed skills, as a seller i have got some skills in this area. Communication(oral) skill is the most important skill for seller in my opinion it is the ability to communicate and influence the customers to buy the product. Customer focus is help me to considered customer’s segment. Decision making, in term of family business i have freedom to make a decision on my own some decision was success but some wasn’t and give me a lesson of mistake. Leadership skill, to this skill is the skill which combined many skills together such as, flexibility, initiative, interpersonal, project management, responsibility, problem solving, time management and team work skill.

However, there are a lot of skills that i haven’t obtained such as , written communication skills, cultural sensitively, data handling, enterprising, networking, organizational adaptability, these skills are the skill that required improvement from study, experience and my personal development plan such as, English skills, presentation skills,critical thinking skill which is also provided positive affect to the area of developed skill as well.
